The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has apprehended a man believed to have attempted to rob and murder his date following an argument over the payment of their dinner. The incident occurred in February 2023 and led to the victim sustaining gunshot wounds.

When JSO detectives responded to a call at a local hospital, they encountered a man with two bullet holes in his right arm and one in the right side of his chest. Despite being in considerable pain, the victim was conscious and able to provide some information to the police.

According to initial reports, the victim had been communicating with the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jamal Moreland, on the popular dating app Grindr a few days prior to the incident. They had arranged to meet on February 19, 2023, with the victim driving to Lemon Grass Lane to pick up Moreland.

After meeting, the pair proceeded to a bowling alley, intending to have a drink. However, upon arrival, they discovered that the bar was closed. Undeterred, they decided to purchase a bottle of Crown Royal from a nearby liquor store. They then returned to the bowling alley and retreated to the back part of the parking lot to consume the alcohol.

During their time together, Moreland ordered food and demanded that the victim pay for it. When the victim refused, an argument ensued between the two. Feeling that the date was going poorly, the victim decided to end it and dropped Moreland back off at the street corner where he had been picked up.

Approximately 20-30 minutes later, the victim received a text message from Moreland, requesting to borrow $45 due to an alleged ticket he had received. Although the victim informed Moreland that he did not possess the money, he agreed to pick him up to discuss the matter. Once inside the victim’s truck, Moreland shot him multiple times.

In his attempt to escape, the victim crashed his truck into a ditch on Jones Road. Authorities arrived at the scene and swiftly transported him to a nearby hospital. A subsequent search of the truck led to the discovery of the bottle of alcohol and shell casings.

Security footage captured the crime, enabling a JSO analyst to identify Moreland as the individual seen in the video. At the time of his arrest, Moreland was already in custody at the Brevard County jail for unrelated offenses.

“There is probable cause to believe Moreland was the suspect who committed the Attempted Armed Robbery and Attempted Murder,” stated JSO in the arrest report.
