The Tragic Fire and Suspicious Deaths

In the early hours of Tuesday, January 16, the Davenport Police and Fire Departments responded to a structure fire report in the 5200 block of North Division Street. Upon arrival, the fire crews discovered moderate smoke emanating from an apartment and promptly extinguished the fire. During their search of the premises, they tragically found two deceased individuals. The fire’s origin and the cause of death were determined to be homicides. The victims have been identified as Brian L. Goodwin, aged 44, and Amy M. Smith, also aged 44.

According to the police, Braet and Blake (Prieto) placed combustible materials inside the residence where the victims’ bodies were found. They knowingly worked together to mutilate the bodies using fire, in an attempt to conceal their heinous crime of murder.

On January 18, Braet and Blake (Prieto) were apprehended on outstanding warrants. During their arrest, they were found to be in possession of 4.3 grams of heroin and 11 grams of methamphetamine.

Detective Testifies on the Gruesome Details

Davenport Police Detective Brandon Askew testified that both Goodwin and Smith had been shot. The shooting occurred between 4:30 and 7 a.m. on January 15. Askew also confirmed the recovery of two firearms from the crime scene. The bodies were discovered on a bed in one of the bedrooms. Goodwin sustained gunshot wounds to the left upper chest and right side of the head, while Smith was shot on the right side of the head.

The investigation is utilizing surveillance footage and traffic videos. Notably, a black four-door sedan is seen arriving at the residence approximately six to eight minutes before the fire became visible. At least two individuals exited the vehicle. Detective Askew emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that several narcotics investigations led them to the house. Numerous individuals have been interviewed in connection with this case.

Askew also revealed that Melisa Weber and Blake were friends and had been incarcerated together previously. According to the police, Weber knowingly supported the actions of the co-defendants in mutilating the victims’ bodies using fire and subsequently assisted them in fleeing from justice following the double murder.

After the fire, Blake and Braet were found at a hotel in Galesburg. Investigators discovered cell phones and photos of the two posing with guns and body armor at the hotel. In one video, Blake can be heard confessing, “I shot both of them.”

Both Braet and Blake, who are felons from prior cases, are scheduled for arraignment on March 14 in Scott County Court.
