BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of a 41-year-old man who has been charged with multiple felonies following a high-speed chase that occurred on February 11th. The suspect, identified as Barry Lee Derr of Fairfield, now faces serious charges that include driving offenses and assault on law enforcement.

According to the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 10:59 a.m. on Sunday when deputies observed a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. Acting promptly, the deputies conducted a traffic stop in the vicinity of the 3000 block of Lee Highway.

During the stop, Derr, the driver of the vehicle, exited and engaged in a conversation with his passenger. However, he suddenly reentered the driver’s seat and fled the scene, igniting a high-speed pursuit.

In their pursuit of Derr, Bedford County Deputies chased him as he entered the county, traveling eastbound on Route 460 at an excessively high speed. The pursuit continued into the Town of Bedford, where the Bedford Town Police Department came to their aid by successfully disabling the suspect’s vehicle tires.

Despite driving on only rims, Derr continued his attempt to evade arrest by speeding south on Falling Creek Road, even outside the town limits.

Finally, deputies managed to halt the suspect’s vehicle at the intersection of Falling Creek Road and Otterhill Road, where they took Derr into custody without further incident.

Following his arrest, Derr has been charged with several offenses, including driving without an operator’s license, felony eluding law enforcement, assault on law enforcement, and possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felony.

Moreover, additional charges are pending against Derr in both Bedford and Botetourt Counties. As of now, he is being held without bond at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail.
