TEWKSBURY — A tragic three-vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer on Interstate 495 has resulted in the untimely death of a 26-year-old man from Lawrence. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, leaving the local community in shock and mourning.
At approximately 6 p.m., State Police received multiple distress calls reporting a serious crash on Interstate 495 North near mile marker 84. Responding swiftly, troopers arrived at the scene to find a devastating wreck involving three vehicles, including a tractor trailer that had collided with a 2022 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.
Despite the immediate response from Westford Fire and EMS, who worked diligently to extricate the operator of the Tacoma, the young Lawrence man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
Fortunately, the operators of the other vehicles involved in the collision emerged from the incident unscathed.
Based on a preliminary investigation by the police, it appears that a 2012 Volkswagen EOS was traveling northbound in the right lane of Interstate 495. Simultaneously, the 2014 Freightliner tractor trailer was also heading northbound in the middle lane. The Tacoma, driven by the deceased, was likewise traveling in the vicinity.
As per police reports, the initial impact occurred when the Volkswagen collided with the front right side of the tractor trailer. This collision caused the tractor trailer to veer off the left side of the roadway and into the grassy median. However, the tractor trailer then reentered the road, leading to a secondary collision with the Tacoma. The force of the impact caused the Tacoma to overturn and tragically be overrun by the tractor-trailer.
The State Police Concord Barracks, in collaboration with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and State Police Crime Scene Services Section, are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. They aim to determine the exact sequence of events and any contributing factors that may have led to this devastating crash.
In order to facilitate recovery and cleanup operations, the left and center travel lanes of Interstate 495 were temporarily closed off.
