80-Year-Old Passes Away at Mumbai Airport Due to Non-Availability of Wheelchair

Mumbai: Mumbai Airport is known for providing various facilities to its citizens. However, it is also known that due to the lack of certain amenities, travelers often express their dissatisfaction. Several videos of the chaos that occurs at the airport have gone viral on social media. Amidst such incidents, a piece of information has come to light about a tragic incident at Mumbai Airport. An 80-year-old man passed away near the immigration counter due to the unavailability of a wheelchair.

According to the available information, the deceased senior citizen was a non-resident Indian and a passport holder of both India and the United States. He had pre-booked a wheelchair facility. He and his wife had booked tickets for Air India’s flight AI-116, traveling from New York to Mumbai in the economy class. The flight arrived in Mumbai on Sunday. An airport employee, on the condition of anonymity, revealed that there were 32 wheelchair passengers on the flight, but only 15 wheelchairs were available at the airport. Unfortunately, the elderly man did not receive a wheelchair.

After disembarking at Mumbai Airport, the wheelchair that was provided broke down, leaving only the wheelchair assistant available. The wife of the deceased sat on the wheelchair that was available, and the 80-year-old began to walk. He walked approximately 1.5 kilometers to reach the immigration area. After that, he stumbled on the ground. He was immediately taken to the medical room at the airport and then transferred to the Nanavati Hospital. However, the doctors declared him dead.

An Air India official stated that due to the high demand for wheelchairs, we constantly request passengers to wait until a wheelchair assistant becomes available. But the passenger had chosen to walk with his wife. This incident is truly unfortunate. We are in contact with the family of the deceased and have offered them necessary assistance and support. However, a ground staff member mentioned that we always see that elderly passengers feel unsafe while traveling from the aircraft to the airport terminal. They prefer to stay close to each other. Therefore, they often do not request a wheelchair. But due to this incident, questions are being raised about the facilities provided to passengers.

In conclusion, this incident highlights the importance of providing adequate facilities to elderly passengers at the airport. It is essential to ensure their safety and comfort during their journey. The authorities need to address this issue and take necessary measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. The untimely demise of the elderly gentleman is indeed a sad event and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family during this difficult time..
