Beloved Elephant Calf Tsuni Passes Away at Pittsburgh Zoo

Tragic Loss of Tsuni

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The Pittsburgh Zoo is mourning the loss of their beloved elephant calf, Tsuni. The 2-year-old elephant passed away after a sudden and brief battle with elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV), a challenging disease that affects elephants in both human care and the wild. Unfortunately, younger elephants like Tsuni are at the highest risk, with an 85% mortality rate.

Early Detection and Treatment

The zoo revealed that Tsuni did not show any visible signs of EEHV. It was through routine blood testing on February 8th that the virus was detected. Despite immediate treatment and support, Tsuni’s condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to her untimely demise.

A Devastating Loss

Dr. Jeremy Goodman, the president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo, expressed his sorrow over Tsuni’s passing. He said, “Tsuni held a special place in the hearts of staff and visitors alike. Her loss is devastating to our entire zoo family. Her ability to fight through her early life medical challenges had been such an inspiration to everyone that worked with her. She will be terribly missed by everyone here as well as elephant lovers all over the world.”

A Brave Journey

Tsuni, born in 2021, resided at the International Conservation Center in Somerset before her passing. She faced several health conditions during her first two months of life. Daryl Hoffman, the vice president of living collections, explained that calves are born with maternal antibodies that decrease over time. Tsuni’s health issues at birth may have impacted her antibodies, making her more susceptible to illnesses.

A Bright and Playful Spirit

Ayeshah Al-Humaidhi, the director of the International Conservation Center, fondly remembered Tsuni’s personality. She described Tsuni as spunky, curious, and always up to something. Tsuni’s intelligence and willingness to participate in her care showcased the incredible bond she shared with her keepers.

Past Losses at Pittsburgh Zoo

This is not the first time the Pittsburgh Zoo has experienced the heartbreaking loss of an elephant calf. In 2017, another calf, born prematurely, struggled to gain weight and was ultimately euthanized. Tsuni’s passing marks the fourth animal death at the zoo within the past six months, following the deaths of Kovu the red panda in July, Kit the lion shortly after, and Mrithi the gorilla last month.

Fond Memories and Global Impact

Tsuni’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Her story of resilience and determination touched the lives of many. The loss of Tsuni serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by animals in both captivity and the wild.
