MEXICO CITY.- The British film industry mourns the loss of beloved actress Sasha Montenegro, known for her unforgettable roles in films such as “Beautiful at Night,” “Cabaret Nights,” and “Pedro Navaja.” The talented actress, who was also the ex-wife of Mexican President José López Portillo, passed away at the age of 78.

Sasha Montenegro’s death was confirmed by the Film Library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Association of Interpreters on Wednesday night. While the exact cause of her death has not been specified, her legacy as an actress will forever be remembered.

Montenegro, born Aleksandra Aimovi Popovi in Italy on January 20, 1946, came from an aristocratic Montenegrin family that fell victim to the atrocities of Nazism. During World War II, she and her family emigrated to the American continent, initially settling in Argentina. It was there that her father, Zivojin Aimovi, sadly passed away, leaving her mother Silvia Popovi to raise the children from her second marriage.

In the late 1960s, Sasha Montenegro made her way to Mexico, where she embarked on a successful career as a fotonovela actress and model. Her captivating beauty and undeniable talent quickly garnered attention, propelling her into the world of film and theater.

Aside from her notable roles in “Beautiful at Night,” “Cabaret Nights,” and “Pedro Navaja,” Montenegro also showcased her talent in films such as “A Dream of Love,” “Saint against Black Magic,” “Son of My Life,” and “Santo and Blue Demon against Doctor Frankenstein.” Her performances captivated audiences and solidified her status as a superstar in Mexico.

She began a romantic relationship with Mexican President José López Portillo while he was still married to Carmen Romano. Their relationship caused a scandal, leading to López Portillo’s divorce from Romano in 1991.

Four years later, in 1995, Montenegro and López Portillo tied the knot. Prior to their marriage, they had already welcomed their children Nabila and Alexander into the world. Sadly, their marriage was cut short due to López Portillo’s passing in 2004, leaving their divorce proceedings unfinished.
