Peter J. Spaulding, a well-respected figure in New Hampshire politics, passed away on February 12, 2024, at the age of 80. He had been battling pancreatic cancer, a devastating illness that ultimately claimed his life.

A Life of Service

Born in New London, Peter J. Spaulding dedicated his life to public service. After graduating from the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he embarked on a remarkable career that spanned over several decades.

In 1970, Spaulding was elected as a Merrimack County commissioner, a position that allowed him to make a positive impact on his community. Inspired by his desire to serve, he later ran for Executive Council, successfully securing a seat that he held for an impressive 24 years. His commitment to public service was undeniable.

During his tenure, Spaulding had the opportunity to work on multiple presidential campaigns. He formed a close bond with U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona and served as the New Hampshire campaign co-chairman during McCain’s runs in 2000 and 2008. His contributions to the Republican Party were recognized on a national level.

Additionally, Spaulding was a member of St. Peters Lodge F&AM 31 in Bradford, where he found camaraderie and friendship.

Throughout his life, Spaulding held various positions that allowed him to make a meaningful impact. From 1994 to 2006, he served as the vice president for government relations at Providian National Bank. From 2007 to 2010, he worked as the director of business relations for the N.H. Department of Employment Security. His expertise and dedication were evident in every role he undertook.

Peter J. Spaulding leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, his sons Joshua and Benjamin, and his daughter Christine. They were a source of strength and support throughout his life, and his memory will forever live on in their hearts.

Waters Funeral Home, located at 50 S. Main St. in Concord, is coordinating the funeral arrangements for Peter J. Spaulding. Visiting hours are scheduled for Tuesday, February 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
