Born in Dearham, Peggy Bryan, 93, Passes Away After a Period of Illness
Peggy Bryan, a beloved member of the community, has sadly passed away on February 5 in Suffolk. She was 93 years old. Peggy had moved to Suffolk four years ago to spend time with her daughter, but due to the Covid pandemic, she remained there until her death.
Peggy was born in Dearham and had a fulfilling life. She met her late husband, Tom, while they were both working at the jam factory in Maryport. The couple eventually settled down in Maryport’s Brooklands Avenue, where they built their home and raised their two children, Margaret and Jim.
Remembering Peggy’s Life
Peggy’s son, Jim Bryan, fondly recalls his mother’s vibrant personality and her dedication to her work. After leaving the jam factory, Peggy worked at Childware before becoming a postwoman alongside her husband. This is how she earned the nickname “Peggy the postwoman.” She served as a postwoman for nearly 20 years, delivering mail along the challenging Ewanrigg route in Maryport, which involved navigating steep hills and countless steps.
Outside of work, Peggy enjoyed playing bingo twice a week and was an active member of the Ewanrigg Community Centre. She relished the opportunity to socialize with her friends, engaging in lively conversations and putting the world to rights during their weekly “coffee and craic” gatherings.
A Loving Mother and a Cherished Member of the Community
Jim lovingly describes his mother as an “all-round good egg” and a great mam. Peggy’s dedication to her family was evident in the close bond she shared with her 25 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Despite her age, Peggy managed to see all of her grandchildren within a month of her passing. She found joy in interacting with the younger generation, especially when they visited her in bed at her daughter’s house.
Peggy’s family finds solace in the knowledge that she has been reunited with her beloved late husband, Tom, who passed away a few years ago after 50 years of marriage.
Saying Goodbye to Peggy
Peggy will be cremated on Tuesday, February 27 in Suffolk. A committal of ashes service will also take place in Maryport at a later date, to be announced. The family is grateful for the support and condolences they have received during this difficult time.
Peggy Bryan will be remembered by her family, friends, and the community as a loving mother, a dedicated postwoman, and a cherished member of the Ewanrigg community. Her warm personality and zest for life will be greatly missed.
