Marvel Comics Legend Paul Neary Passes Away at 74

The comic book industry has lost one of its legendary talents with the passing of Paul Neary. Neary, who was known for his iconic work at both Marvel and DC, died at the age of 74. His friend and colleague, Alan Davis, broke the news in a heartfelt statement, revealing that Neary had been battling illness for some time.

A Multifaceted Talent

Paul Neary was a true Renaissance man of the comic book world. He possessed a rare combination of skills, excelling in writing, inking, coloring, lettering, and editing. Throughout his illustrious career, Neary made significant contributions to some of the most iconic titles in the industry.

Neary’s work on books like Excalibur, Batman and The Outsiders, The Authority, Ultimates, and JLA showcased his immense talent and creativity. Additionally, he served as Marvel UK Editor-in-Chief at two different times, leaving a lasting impact on the industry.

A Tribute to a Comic Book Legend

Alan Davis, a close friend and colleague of Neary, paid tribute to the late artist in a touching statement. Davis described Neary as a mentor, colleague, and friend, highlighting his contributions to the comic book industry over a career spanning more than fifty years.

Davis also shared details about Neary’s early years, revealing that his passion for comics began as a hobby during his time at Leeds University. Neary’s determination and talent led him to secure his first professional work with Jim Warren’s office in New York, working on the Hunter series for Eerie magazine.

From Marvel UK to International Success

After his time with Warren Publishing, Neary found work in the UK with Hammer Comics movie adaptations and the Doctor Who magazine. He even ghosted Sid Jordan on the Lance McLane newspaper strip. However, Neary desired more substantial employment, which led him to accept an art/editorial role at Marvel UK.

During his time at Marvel UK, Neary met his partner and future wife, Bernie Jane. As the Editor-in-Chief, Neary aimed to bring originality to the UK comic book scene by creating home-grown strips. One of his notable achievements was reinventing Captain Britain.

A Passion for Sci-Fi and Creativity

Neary’s diverse interests in comics, particularly Sci-Fi and European publications, influenced his own creations. He introduced characters like Madman, Tales from the Rim, and Wildweed, showcasing his eclectic and experimental nature.

Throughout his career, Neary transitioned from penciling to inking on titles like Batman and the Outsiders, Detective, and Excalibur. He later returned to Marvel UK as Art Director, where he played a pivotal role in the creation and evolution of numerous titles.

Leaving a Legacy

Neary’s greatest achievement was the nurturing environment he established at Marvel UK, where new creators could learn and develop their skills. Many of these artists went on to achieve success in the US comic market after Marvel UK faced industry decline.

Neary’s exceptional work on titles such as The Authority, Ultimates, and JLA received recognition and awards. However, tragedy struck when illness cut short his career.

Remembering Paul Neary

Those who had the privilege of knowing Paul Neary remember him as an intensely private man who had no interest in fame or public acclaim. His passion for the creative process and fostering creativity in others was evident to all who worked with him.

Paul Neary’s passing is a great loss to the comic book industry. His contributions, talent, and dedication will be remembered and celebrated for years to come. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Neary’s family and friends during this difficult time.
