Paul Neary, Acclaimed Comic Artist and Editor, Passes Away at 74

Paul Neary, a renowned comic artist and editor, known for his work with Marvel UK and DC, has sadly passed away at the age of 74.

A Passionate Fan of Comics

Paul Neary was born in Bournemouth, UK, in December 1949. He had a deep love for comics and turned his passion into a profession in the early ’70s. Neary started his career as an artist at Warren Publishing, where he worked on horror titles such as Eerie, Creepy, and Vampirella.

Marvel UK and Doctor Who Weekly

In the late ’70s, Neary joined Marvel UK and began drawing for Hulk Comic, which later became Incredible Hulk Weekly. He also played a significant role in the launch of Doctor Who Weekly, a comic-based precursor to the ongoing Doctor Who Magazine, by serving as an assistant editor and eventually becoming the editor in 1980.

During his time at Marvel UK, Neary made a pivotal decision by hiring artist Alan Davis and writer Dave Thorpe to reinvent Captain Britain. Although Thorpe left after a few issues, Davis stayed on, and Neary brought in a young Alan Moore to write the strip. Neary himself collaborated with Moore on a couple of Tharg’s Future Shocks for the sci-fi anthology 2000 AD.

Returning to Artistry

After a few years as Marvel UK’s editor-in-chief, Neary returned to his roots as an artist. He worked on titles like Ka-Zar the Savage and Captain America for Marvel US. Neary’s collaboration with Davis continued at DC, where he inked Batman and the Outsiders. This partnership also led to a successful run on Detective Comics and Excalibur, which won them the 1989 Eisner Award for Best Art Team.
