Accident – Death – Obituary News : ASHEVILLE – Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with the breaking and entering and attempted robbery of a Leicester residence on February 9, resulting in the shooting of a juvenile. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on February 15, revealing that Noah Berry McDade and Jayden Saleem Smith, both 19 and from Asheville, have been charged with felony breaking and entering, felony conspiracy, and felony attempted armed robbery. Additionally, a 16-year-old has been taken into custody and faces charges related to the shooting, although this individual is separate from the 17-year-old who was shot at the residence on Lifting Fog Drive.

According to Aaron Sarver, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, the incident unfolded when three masked individuals forcibly entered the Leicester home around 12:25 p.m. On the 911 call obtained by the Citizen Times, residents reported that the intruders had brandished firearms. One of the occupants, identified as Nevel Swain in warrant documents, made the distress call from a closet within the house, stating that he had shot one of the intruders.

Upon responding to the report, deputies discovered the injured intruder and promptly transported them to Mission Hospital. It is worth noting that Swain has not been charged in relation to the shooting. The 17-year-old victim, a student at TC Roberson High School, was shot on Lifting Fog Drive on February 9, as confirmed by Sarver. Over the weekend, friends and family of the victim, PJ Deshauteurs, revealed that the incident had left the aspiring athlete’s life in disarray. A GoFundMe page was set up by Deshauteurs’ godfather, Allen Williams, to support the 17-year-old, and it has since raised over $24,000.

During their investigation, deputies detected the smell of marijuana within the residence. Warrant documents indicate that law enforcement officers discovered three handguns, 12 mobile phones, and nearly 16 ounces of marijuana. As a result, Jonathan Tanner Boyd, a 20-year-old resident of the Leicester home, was arrested and charged with felony possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Julian Carver, the property owner, has informed the Boyd family that they must vacate the premises following the robbery.

Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller expressed gratitude for the diligent efforts of the Sheriff’s Office personnel involved in the complex investigation. The news release also mentioned that additional arrests and charges are expected in connection with the incident. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office at 828-250-6670.
