Lewis R. Smoot Sr., a prominent figure in the Columbus business and minority communities, has sadly passed away at the age of 90. Smoot, known as a “giant” in his field, was the CEO of Smoot Construction and played a significant role in shaping the city’s Black community.

A Legacy of Leadership and Mentorship

Smoot’s journey in the construction industry began at a young age, when he started working for his father’s masonry company, Smoot Construction. After earning a degree in construction management from Michigan State University and serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Smoot joined his father’s firm in 1958.

Under Smoot’s leadership, the company flourished, expanding its focus from masonry to general contracting. The firm undertook numerous high-profile projects, including the renovations of the Ohio Statehouse and Ohio Supreme Court buildings, the Mall at Tuttle Crossing, and the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital.

Smoot’s dedication extended beyond his professional career, as he actively engaged in various civic activities. He was passionate about helping young Black residents succeed and provided mentorship to many aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals.

A Lasting Impact on the Community

Former Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman emphasized the profound influence Smoot had on his life. He recalled Smoot’s mentorship during a challenging period in his career and described him as a calming voice and guiding figure.

Throughout his life, Smoot served on the boards of Huntington Bancshares and M/I Homes, was a trustee at Franklin University, and co-chaired the Columbus Community Relations Commission. He also held a position on the Ohio State University President’s Business Advisory Council.

Continuing the Legacy

In 2021, Smoot passed the reins of Smoot Construction to his son, Lewis Smoot Jr., but remained Chairman Emeritus until his passing. His wisdom, experience, and commitment to excellence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Lewis R. Smoot Sr.’s impact on the Columbus business and minority communities is immeasurable. His dedication, integrity, and leadership have left an indelible mark on the city. As we mourn his loss, we can only hope to see more individuals like Lewis Smoot Sr. emerge to continue his legacy.
