Two women tragically lost their lives after being struck by a car while crossing a road in St. Louis, Missouri. The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, as the women were making their way home from a Drake concert at the Enterprise Center. Local outlet First Alert 4 reported that the victims were a mother and daughter.
The two women have been identified as 42-year-old Laticha Bracero and her 21-year-old daughter, Alyssa Cordova, who were visiting St. Louis from Chicago, Illinois.
According to the police incident summary, a speeding driver ran a red light around 12:30 a.m. and struck multiple pedestrians and vehicles at an intersection in St. Louis. The driver was operating a 2020 Jeep Cherokee and was traveling at a “high rate of speed.” The vehicle first “sideswiped” a 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander before rotating clockwise and hitting the two women, who were legally crossing the road on the designated crosswalk after leaving the concert.
After striking the pedestrians, the Jeep then crashed into another vehicle. Tragically, one of the women was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other passed away after being transported to a nearby hospital.
In addition to the fatalities, four other individuals, including two teenagers, sustained injuries in the crash. The 22-year-old driver of the Jeep also suffered injuries and remains hospitalized. As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
Alarming Increase in Traffic Deaths Raises Concerns in St. Louis
St. Louis has experienced a concerning rise in traffic deaths in recent years, accompanied by a decrease in traffic enforcement, as reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In 2021, the St. Louis Police made only half the number of traffic stops they did in 2009, resulting in half as many traffic-related fatalities during that period.
City authorities and leaders acknowledge the persistent issue and are actively working towards a solution. Mayor Tishaura O. Jones stated, “Reckless driving continues to be an urgent and immediate issue that directly affects the safety and wellbeing of residents and visitors alike.” She emphasized the city’s investments in traffic and pedestrian infrastructure but stressed the need for further action to address the problem.
The tragic accident in St. Louis highlights the importance of enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring the safety of pedestrians in the city.
