The Investigation and Arrest

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) collaborated with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to apprehend Jason P. Marnell, a resident of Richmond, Kansas. The arrest took place near the intersection of Highway 59 and Clark Rd. on the evening of Wednesday, February 14.

The Tragic Incident

Law enforcement officials stated that the arrest was a result of a murder investigation prompted by the death of Marnell’s newborn son in January. The incident began on January 14 when emergency services received a distress call from 304 E. Central St. in Richmond. Responding to the call, they found the 1-month-old child, named Waylon S. Marnell, unresponsive.

Swift life-saving measures were initiated by the first responders before the infant was rushed to an Ottawa hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

KBI’s Involvement and Tragic Outcome

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called in on January 17 to assist with the ongoing investigation. Sadly, on the following day, Waylon was taken off life-support and pronounced deceased at approximately 3 p.m.

Arrest and Charges

Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, law enforcement officials hold Marnell responsible for the injuries that led to his child’s tragic demise. Consequently, he was taken into custody and booked into the Franklin County Detention Center. Marnell faces charges of first-degree murder and child abuse.
