Lawyer Chen Chun-han Passes Away at 40

Taipei, Feb. 15 (CNA) – Lawyer Chen Chun-han, who lived with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and was recently a legislator-at-large candidate for the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has sadly passed away at the age of 40. The DPP confirmed his death on Thursday.

In a statement released by the DPP, it was revealed that Chen’s family had kept his passing a secret until Thursday due to the Lunar New Year holiday. Chen is believed to have died from complications related to a cold.

A Life of Triumph and Dedication

Chen Chun-han was not only known for his inspiring resilience in the face of adversity but also for his impressive accomplishments. Despite living with SMA, a condition that severely limited his physical movements, Chen was determined to make a difference.

He pursued a law degree at National Taiwan University, where he achieved the highest marks in the Taiwan bar exams in 2006. Chen’s pursuit of knowledge took him to Harvard University, where he obtained a master’s degree in law in 2012. He later passed the New York State Bar exams in 2013 and received his degree in 2014.

Although Chen had the opportunity to work as a lawyer in the United States and access better medical treatments for his condition, he chose to return to Taiwan. He dedicated his career to fighting for human rights and advocating for the rights of disabled individuals in his home country.

A Voice for the Disabled

Chen’s passion for equality extended beyond his own personal journey. He worked tirelessly to amend laws and make them more inclusive for persons with disabilities. Chen firmly believed that disabled individuals deserved the chance to pursue their dreams and called for increased support for disabled students on university campuses.

His efforts were recognized, and he obtained a Ph.D. in law from the University of Michigan in 2022. He then became a Postdoctoral Scholar at Taiwan’s Academia Sinica in May 2023, further solidifying his position as a prominent advocate for disability rights.

A Legacy Worth Remembering

News of Chen Chun-han’s passing has deeply saddened many, including President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President and President-elect Lai Ching-te. Both leaders expressed their condolences and praised Chen for his unwavering determination and commitment to fighting for the rights of disabled individuals.

Chen’s resilience and dedication have touched the hearts of many, including those who previously criticized him. Chinese journalist Wang Zhian, who imitated Chen’s voice on a talk show and had later apologized, expressed his sincere condolences and regret for his past actions.

In a Facebook post, the host of the talk show, Hello, acknowledged Chen’s remarkable strength and thanked him for his devotion to Taiwan. Wang also pledged a donation of 1 million Japanese Yen (US$6,667) to the Taiwan Foundation for Rare Disorders as a gesture of apology.

A Lasting Impact

Although the cause of Chen Chun-han’s death has not been officially confirmed, his legacy as a fighter for disability rights will live on. Chen’s determination and achievements serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all members of society.

As we mourn the loss of Lawyer Chen Chun-han, let us honor his memory by continuing to work towards a more inclusive and compassionate world.
