Four students were wounded on Wednesday afternoon when gunfire erupted in the parking lot of Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta. The incident, which took place after school hours, left three 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old injured. Fortunately, all four victims were rushed to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive, according to the police.
The school district released a statement confirming that no other students, faculty, or staff members were harmed in the incident. The Atlanta Police Department announced that the school district’s own police department is leading the investigation into the shooting. However, the Atlanta Public Schools Police Department declined to comment on the matter.
As a precautionary measure, all after-school activities have been canceled, but classes are set to resume as scheduled on Thursday, as stated by the school district.
Investigation Underway: Suspects Detained for Questioning
Following the incident, the Atlanta Police immediately launched a search for a suspect vehicle that was spotted in the parking lot at the time of the shooting. Atlanta Police Major Ralph Woolfolk stated in a news conference that they were able to swiftly apprehend the vehicle.
Upon stopping the car, located approximately five miles away from the school, authorities discovered a 35-year-old mother, a 17-year-old girl, and another male. All three individuals were taken to the police headquarters for questioning. The police confirmed that they are cooperating and actively engaging with investigators.
As of now, no charges have been filed, and the names of the individuals involved have not been disclosed.
Incident Occurred After Altercation
According to the police, the shooting incident unfolded shortly after a physical altercation broke out around 4 p.m. This altercation occurred just after the students were dismissed for the day, which ultimately escalated into gunshots being fired.
Atlanta Shooting Amidst a Day of Gun Violence in the U.S.
The shooting at Benjamin E. Mays High School follows a series of other gun-related incidents that took place across the United States on the same day. Notably, one such incident occurred at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl victory parade.
During the Chiefs parade, one person was killed and 21 others sustained injuries. Eight victims were in critical condition, seven were reported to have life-threatening injuries, and six suffered minor injuries. Authorities have detained three individuals in connection with the incident.
In another incident in Washington, D.C., four law enforcement officers were injured, including three who were shot, during the execution of a warrant for animal cruelty. The suspect, who was barricaded inside a home, fired at the officers. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the officers returned fire.
Furthermore, this day marked the sixth anniversary of the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 lives were lost.
