William Post, Michigan Man Who Played Important Role in Pop-Tarts Development, Dies at 96

GLEN ARBOR, Mich. — William Post, a Michigan man who played an important role in the development of Pop-Tarts, has passed away at the age of 96. Post died on Saturday, although no specific details about his death have been provided in the family obituary.

William Post was raised in Grand Rapids as one of seven children of Dutch immigrants. He had a successful career and retired at the age of 56 as a senior vice president with the Keebler Company. After retiring, he settled in Glen Arbor, Michigan.

Kellanova, formerly known as Kellogg Co., expressed deep sadness at Post’s passing. In a statement released on Wednesday, the company said, “He played an important role in co-creating the iconic Pop-Tarts brand, and we are grateful to Bill for his legacy and lasting contributions to our company.”

The popular toaster pastry known as Pop-Tarts made its debut in 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio. Initially, it was sold in four flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant. The following year, it was released nationwide, becoming a household name.

According to Post’s obituary, he was working as a plant manager with a company later known as the Keebler Company when Kellogg executives approached him with an idea for a new product. One of those executives was Kellogg chairman William LaMothe, who soon became a close friend of Bill’s.

The obituary clarifies that while Bill is often credited with “inventing” the Pop Tart, he would say, “I assembled an amazing team that developed Kellogg’s concept of a shelf-stable toaster pastry into a fine product that we could bring to market in the span of just four months.”

William Post’s wife, Florence, passed away in 2020. He is survived by a son, a daughter, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A service to honor Post’s life will be held on March 7 at the Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids.

In conclusion, William Post’s contribution to the creation and success of Pop-Tarts is undoubtedly significant. His dedication and leadership in developing the iconic toaster pastry will be remembered as part of his lasting legacy. As we mourn his passing, we celebrate the impact he made on the Kellogg Company and the countless households that have enjoyed the delicious treat he helped bring to market.
