William Post, the genius behind the creation of the beloved snack food Pop-Tarts, has sadly passed away at the age of 96. His innovative mind and dedication to his work revolutionized the breakfast pastry industry, leaving a lasting impact on generations of snack enthusiasts.

The Birth of an Iconic Treat

In the early 1960s, William Post served as the plant manager of Keebler Company. It was during this time that he was given the task of developing a shelf-stable toaster pastry. Over the course of four months, Post tirelessly worked on perfecting what would later be known as Pop-Tarts.

Originally, the breakfast pastry was named “Fruit Scone” according to the company’s official website. However, the creators saw an opportunity to align the product with the pop culture movement of the era and decided to rename it Pop-Tarts.

1964 marked the debut of Pop-Tarts, with four original flavors: strawberry, blueberry, brown sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant. Today, there is a wide range of 20 to 30 flavors available on the market at any given time, catering to various taste preferences.

A Legacy in the Biscuit Industry

William Post’s journey in the biscuit industry began when he joined Hekman Biscuit Company, which later became known as the Keebler Company, at the young age of 21. Through hard work and determination, he climbed the ranks and eventually became the company’s plant manager.

It was during his tenure at Keebler that William LaMothe, a Kellogg’s executive, recognized the potential of their idea for a shelf-stable snack food. Post assembled a remarkable team that successfully developed Kellogg’s concept of a toaster pastry into a high-quality product that could be brought to market in just four months.

This collaboration between Kellogg’s and Keebler led to the acquisition of Keebler by Kellogg’s, merging their extraordinary food ideas. Post continued to contribute to the company as its senior vice president until the age of 56, after which he remained a consultant for an additional 20 years.

A Life Remembered

William Post’s passing comes after the loss of his wife, Florence, in 2020. He is survived by his children, Dan and Jackie Post, and Rachel and John DeYoung, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of his loved ones and the countless individuals who have savored the joy of Pop-Tarts.

While the cause of William Post’s death is not specified, his impact on the snack industry and his innovative contributions will continue to be celebrated. His creation, Pop-Tarts, remains a cherished treat enjoyed by millions around the world, a testament to his ingenuity and vision.
