William “Bill” Post, the mastermind behind the creation of the beloved breakfast treat, Pop-Tarts, has passed away at the age of 96. This sad news was confirmed by a local obituary published in The Grand Rapids Press on Saturday, February 10.

Early Life and Career

Born on June 27, 1927, in Michigan to Dutch immigrants, William Post grew up in the Grand Rapids area. At the tender age of 16, he started working as a truck washer at Hekman Biscuit Company. Even after his service in the Army Air Corps in Japan, Post continued his employment at Hekman. His dedication and hard work paid off when he was promoted to the position of personnel manager at the age of 21.

As time went on, Hekman Biscuit Company transformed into the well-known Keebler Company. During the early 1960s, Keebler joined forces with Kellogg’s to develop a groundbreaking breakfast product. Post, who was serving as a plant manager at that time, played a pivotal role in leading the team responsible for creating the Pop-Tart. The entire project spanned four months, and it was Post who came up with the name “Pop-Tart” for what was initially referred to as “fruit muffins.”

A Trailblazing Success

Despite facing skepticism from many, Post’s unwavering belief in the potential of the Pop-Tart prevailed. In a 2021 interview with WWMT, he fondly reminisced, saying, “There were so many naysayers. Some of my good friends would say, ‘I don’t know Bill.’ They’d tell us that’s not such a good idea.”

Eventually, Kellogg’s acquired the Keebler Company, prompting Post and his family to relocate to Elmhurst, Illinois. There, he served as a senior vice president until his retirement at the age of 56. Post’s dedication to the company didn’t end there. He continued his association with Kellogg’s as a consultant for another 20 years.

After retiring, Post decided to settle in Glen Arbor, but in 2003, he returned to Grand Rapids to be closer to his loved ones. Throughout his life, he also contributed to the community by serving as a board member for various schools, churches, and the YMCA.

In addition to his professional achievements, Post leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his two children, four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. His impact on the world of breakfast foods will forever be cherished.
