Accident – Death – Obituary News : GILLETTE, Wyo. — Law enforcement agencies in Campbell County, Wyoming, are currently engaged in a tense standoff with an armed suspect in Sheridan. The suspect, identified as 46-year-old William Lowery, is believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting of Sheridan Police Sgt. Nevada Krinkee. The incident occurred when Krinkee was attempting to serve a trespass notice on February 13th in the area of 5th Street and Val Vista Street, according to the City of Sheridan.
After the shooting, Lowery fled the scene and was later located barricaded inside a residence on 6th Street and North Sheridan Avenue. Sheridan authorities evacuated nearby residents and called for assistance from multiple Wyoming agencies. The Gillette Police Department dispatched its tactical unit and sent 20 officers to the scene to aid in the standoff. The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office also sent eight deputies to assist. The standoff is ongoing as law enforcement officials work to find a safe resolution.
In their efforts to apprehend the suspect, authorities have utilized an armored vehicle to remove windows and a garage door, limiting Lowery’s hiding places. Sheriff Scott Matheny emphasized that his office is providing support in the operation, and the incident remains an outside case.
Multiple agencies, including Natrona County, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau of Land Management, the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Administration, and fire and emergency medical services, have responded to the scene.
The Wyoming DCI released a statement, indicating that few details will be made public until the investigation is complete and a prosecutorial decision has been made. The division stated that the names of the involved parties will not be released at this time.
The tragic loss of Sgt. Nevada Krinkee has deeply saddened Wyoming. Krinkee, a six-and-a-half-year veteran of the Sheridan Police Department, was shot and killed in the line of duty. Sheridan Mayor Rich Bridger expressed his condolences, acknowledging the risks that law enforcement officers face daily. Senator Cynthia Lummis also offered her prayers and support to Krinkee’s family and loved ones, recognizing the dangers that Wyoming law enforcement officers face while serving the state.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon ordered that the U.S. and Wyoming flags be lowered at the Capitol and Sheridan in honor of Krinkee. He extended his deepest condolences to Krinkee’s family, the Sheridan Police Department, and the entire law enforcement community.
Sheriff Matheny also expressed his condolences to Krinkee’s family and the community of Sheridan. The City of Gillette and the City of Sheridan shared their support for Krinkee and the Sheridan Police Department on social media, thanking everyone for their thoughts and prayers.
The City of Sheridan expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community and law enforcement agencies, including the cities of Gillette and Casper, who immediately responded to their call for assistance.
As the situation in Sheridan remains unresolved, the City of Sheridan expressed confidence in the management of the scene and praised the willingness of many to step up in times of need. Sgt. Nevada Krinkee’s death marks the 62nd Wyoming law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty.
Krinkee is survived by his wife, Sheridan Police Cpl. Karla Krinkee, and their infant daughter, according to the Sheridan Press.
