Veteran BBC radio presenter and broadcasting “legend” Steve Wright has sadly passed away at the age of 69. With a career spanning over four decades, Wright hosted shows on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. His last on-air appearance was hosting a pre-recorded Valentine’s show on Sunday, and he passed away on Monday.

The family of Steve Wright released a statement expressing their deep sorrow and profound regret at his passing. He is survived by his son, Tom, daughter, Lucy, brother, Laurence, and father, Richard.

Lorna Clarke, the director of music at the BBC, described Wright as “an extraordinary broadcaster – someone audiences loved, and many of us looked up to.” Tributes poured in from his former BBC radio colleagues, including Ken Bruce, Simon Mayo, and Tony Blackburn. Mayo referred to Wright as “one of the greats” and “a fabulous, creative whirlwind of a presenter.”

The news of Wright’s passing has left a void in the radio industry. Radio 2 breakfast presenter Zoe Ball expressed that life would never be the same without him, while Jo Whiley described him as a true legend. Dame Esther Rantzen praised his unique talent and the club-like atmosphere he created for his listeners.

Steve Wright’s illustrious career at the BBC spanned more than 40 years. He started as a clerk before joining Thames Valley Radio and eventually returned to the BBC in 1981 to launch his iconic show, “Steve Wright In The Afternoon.” Though he briefly hosted the Radio 1 breakfast show in 1994, he found his home at Radio 2, where he remained until his passing.

The news of Steve Wright’s death has left BBC director general Tim Davie heartbroken. Davie described him as a truly wonderful broadcaster who had a deep connection with his audience. Radio 2 plans to honor Wright’s life with special programming, paying tribute to his immense contributions to the world of radio.

Steve Wright’s passing comes just weeks after he was awarded an MBE for his services to radio. The BBC community mourns his loss alongside that of Annie Nightingale, Radio 1’s first female DJ, who passed away a month ago.

Helen Thomas, the head of Radio 2, reflected on Wright’s profound impact, expressing her gratitude for having him as part of their team for all these decades. She acknowledged that his talent and friendship would be sorely missed.
