Accident – Death – Obituary News : JEE aspirant commits suicide in Kota hostel room

Jaipur/Kota: In a tragic incident, a 16-year-old JEE aspirant from Chhattisgarh allegedly took his own life in his hostel room in Kota. The incident came to light when the hostel warden discovered the body on Tuesday morning and immediately informed the police.

The deceased has been identified as Shubh Choudhary, a resident of Surajpur in Chhattisgarh. He had recently appeared for the JEE-Mains exam 2024, and the answer key for the same was released on Monday evening, with the results declared early Tuesday morning. It is suspected that Shubh checked his score using the answer key before taking the extreme step. However, the police are yet to confirm the status of his result and marks.

Shubh had been preparing for the JEE at a coaching institute in Kota and had been living in a hostel room in the Jawahar Nagar police station area for the past two years. The Circle officer of the area, DSP Bhawani Singh, stated that no suicide note was found in the room. When Shubh did not respond to calls from his parents on Tuesday morning, they asked the hostel warden to check on him. It was then that the warden discovered his lifeless body hanging from the ceiling fan.

One concerning aspect of the incident is that the fan in the hostel room was not equipped with an anti-suicide device, which goes against safety norms. The body has been placed in the mortuary, and the postmortem will be conducted once his parents arrive from Chhattisgarh.

The family members are yet to reach Kota. The coaching institute has been asked to provide records of the deceased student to determine his performance and the status of his result in JEE-Mains, according to the investigation officer of the case, Jeetmal.

This unfortunate incident marks the third suicide by a coaching student in Kota since January this year. Another incident involved the suicide of a 27-year-old BTech final-year student who hanged himself earlier this month. The alarming number of suicides among coaching students in Kota has raised concerns about the mental well-being and support systems available to these young aspirants.

Last year, Kota reported 26 cases of suicides by coaching students, highlighting the need for improved mental health services and counseling facilities for students facing the immense pressure of competitive exams.
