A third suspect has been indicted in the March 2023 murder of Martin William Davis, according to the Gatesville Police Department. The investigation, conducted by police investigators, the Coryell County District Attorney’s Office, and the Texas Rangers, has led to the identification of 34-year-old Scott Allen Harkcom as the third alleged suspect. Harkcom was indicted by a Coryell County Grand Jury on January 25, 2024, on the charge of murder.

Harkcom was already in custody at the Coryell County Jail on an unrelated charge when he was served with the indictment warrant. Chief Brad Hunt of the Gatesville Police Department stated, “We and our partners have remained diligent in pursuing this case, as we promised. The arrest of this third suspect does not close the case entirely, but ensures the three known parties to Mr. Martin’s death are brought to justice. Our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased.”

The two other suspects involved in the murder case, 21-year-old Shawn Michael Smith-Brearey of Temple and 32-year-old Trevor Lovell Ford of Gatesville, were previously identified and charged with murder on July 21, 2023. Smith-Brearey was apprehended without incident at a Temple residence on July 20, 2023, with the collaborative efforts of the Gatesville Police, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Texas Rangers, and the Temple Police Department. Ford, already in custody on unrelated charges, was served with a murder charge warrant based on the June indictment by a Coryell County Grand Jury.

The victim, Martin William Davis, was a 61-year-old resident of Gatesville. He was identified as the victim on March 27, 2023, after being shot outside his residence on Waco Street. Davis had just returned home from H-E-B and was unloading groceries from his vehicle when the incident occurred.

Surveillance photos captured the three suspects approaching Davis’s residence with their faces and arms covered. Within seconds, one of the suspects fired a fatal shot, and all three fled in a southerly direction.
