In a newly released video, it has been revealed that a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy shot and apprehended a murder suspect who was discovered hiding in a closet. The incident took place in the same residence where the suspect is accused of committing the crime in late December.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department made public the body camera footage on Tuesday, which clearly shows the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Mark Jorge Gambill from Corona, being found more than nine hours after the initial arrival of deputies at the crime scene. However, Sheriff Chad Bianco did not provide any information regarding whether the house had been searched earlier or explain why the suspect wasn’t located sooner.

Additionally, the sheriff did not disclose the reason behind the deputy’s decision to fire the shots. The footage captures the deputy issuing a warning, “Don’t (expletive) move!” before multiple gunshots are heard. It remains unclear whether the deputy who discharged the weapon had a body camera.

According to Sheriff Bianco, the department received reports of a shooting around 2:15 a.m. on December 28 in an unincorporated area near Corona, specifically in the 13400 block of Barker Lane. Upon arrival, they discovered a man who had been shot lying outside his residence. Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

While investigating the homicide, deputies received information suggesting that the suspect might be hiding within the residence. Consequently, a search was initiated. The body camera footage, timestamped around noon on the same day, shows deputies locating the suspect, Gambill, concealed in a bedroom closet. One deputy cautiously holds Gambill at gunpoint, instructing him not to make any sudden movements, while others start to exit the room.

“Get out of the room,” one deputy orders, as they begin to leave. Suddenly, three gunshots are heard, but fortunately, no deputies were harmed during the encounter. Gambill was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

On January 3, Gambill was charged with murder and resisting arrest. He is currently being held on $2 million bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

The California Highway Patrol and the county’s multi-department Force Investigation Detail are jointly investigating the shooting incident.
