The recent shooting at Lakewood Church in Houston has shocked the community and raised questions about the need for stricter gun control laws. The shooter, identified as Genesse Moreno, entered the megachurch with her seven-year-old son and opened fire. Two off-duty police officers fired back, fatally shooting Moreno. In January 2020, officers in Texas’ Wise County reportedly took a gun from Moreno after responding to a domestic dispute between her and her then-husband. In divorce records obtained by ABC13, Moreno’s husband described her as a diagnosed schizophrenic and accused her of becoming abusive soon after they married. Moreno’s former mother-in-law also stated that she had asked for help from child protective services and the police multiple times, but Moreno was still allowed to own guns.

The lack of red flag laws in Texas has come under scrutiny following the shooting. Red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection orders, allow for intervention when someone shows signs of being a danger to themselves or others. These laws enable law enforcement or family members to temporarily take away a person’s guns or prevent them from buying one. Currently, 21 states in the US have enacted red flag laws.

Tanya Schardt, director of state and federal policy at gun safety group Brady, emphasized the need for extreme risk laws, stating that they are a life-saving tool. Nick Suplina, Senior Vice President of Law & Policy at Everytown for Gun Safety, echoed this sentiment and called for immediate action to prevent future tragedies.
