Former Dutch Prime Minister Dries van Agt Passes Away at 93

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Dries van Agt, the former Dutch Prime Minister. Born Andreas Antonius Maria van Agt on February 2, 1931, in Geldrop, the Netherlands, he dedicated his life to public service and made significant contributions to his country.

During his tenure as justice minister in the early summer season of 1977, Mr. van Agt faced a challenging situation when a train was hijacked by South Moluccans, members of a large exile group in the Netherlands originally from a former Dutch Pacific island colony. The Dutch marines eventually ended the standoff by storming the train, unfortunately resulting in the loss of six hijackers and two hostages out of the more than 50 held captive.

In 2014, a government report questioned the violent end of the raid and Mr. van Agt’s handling of the crisis. The report concluded that three of the hijackers who were shot and killed by marines were unarmed, according to the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant.

Despite this, Mr. van Agt’s government collapsed in 1982, leading to the formation of a new government. Nevertheless, he continued to serve as a member of Parliament for his party. In 1987, he left Dutch politics to become the European Union’s ambassador to Japan, while also returning to his passion for teaching.

While serving as the Prime Minister, Mr. van Agt expressed his support for Israel. However, after a visit to Israel in 1999, he underwent what he called a “conversion” experience and began advocating for Palestinian rights, as reported by The Associated Press.

The cause of Dries van Agt’s death is currently unknown.

A Life of Dedication and Service

Dries van Agt’s life was marked by a deep commitment to public service. He was born into a family of textile producers and went on to study law at the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now Radboud University Nijmegen).

Throughout his political career, Mr. van Agt demonstrated resilience and a dedication to making a positive impact on society. As justice minister, he faced the challenging task of resolving the hijacking crisis, which tested his leadership abilities. Despite the controversy surrounding the raid’s violent end, his contributions to Dutch politics cannot be overlooked.

After leaving politics, Mr. van Agt continued to contribute to international relations as the European Union’s ambassador to Japan. His passion for teaching also led him back to the academic world, where he shared his knowledge and experiences with future generations.

Although his support for Israel shifted over time, Mr. van Agt’s willingness to reassess his beliefs and advocate for Palestinian rights is a testament to his open-mindedness and commitment to justice.

Dries van Agt leaves behind a lasting legacy in Dutch politics and a profound impact on the lives of those he served. His dedication to public service and his pursuit of justice will be remembered and celebrated for years to come.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mr. van Agt’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
