Former Lafayette Parish Sheriff and Lafayette City Marshal Donald J. Breaux Passes Away at 87
Former Lafayette Parish Sheriff and Lafayette City Marshal Donald J. Breaux, a distinguished law enforcement officer and respected public servant, has peacefully passed away at the age of 87. Surrounded by his loving family, Breaux left this world on Wednesday morning.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Law Enforcement
Breaux’s career in law enforcement began with the Lafayette Police Department before he joined the Louisiana State Police in 1962. His expertise and instinct for criminal investigation quickly caught the attention of state police command, leading to his promotion through the ranks. Breaux served as lieutenant with the LSP Intelligence Section and eventually became the commander of the LSP Regional Narcotics Division. He retired from state police in 1980, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
A Transition into Politics
While known for his crime-fighting skills, Breaux also had a passion for politics. In 1981, he succeeded the legendary City Marshal Dallas Broussard and became Lafayette City Marshal. Following the retirement of Sheriff Carlo Listi, Breaux ran for Lafayette Parish Sheriff and secured the position in 1983. He served as sheriff for 16 years until his retirement in 2000.
A Mentor and Friend
Sheriff Mark Garber shared his heartfelt sentiments, describing Breaux as not only a mentor but also a friend. Sheriff Garber acknowledged Breaux’s dedication and forward-thinking approach, stating that he played an integral role in shaping the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. Former Sheriff Mike Neustrom, who succeeded Breaux, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Breaux’s impact on the community and his invaluable insight.
A Life of Service and Achievements
Beyond his law enforcement career, Breaux remained active in public service. He served as the past-president and member of the Louisiana State Troopers Association, representing numerous troopers and commanders. Breaux also chaired the National Sheriffs’ Drug Enforcement Commission for the National Sheriffs’ Association.
Breaux’s dedication and contributions did not go unnoticed. He received the Evangeline Area Boy Scouts Most Distinguished Citizen Award, as well as recognition from The American Legion as Outstanding Lawman for the state. In 2015, he was honored as one of Acadiana’s Living Legends and inducted into The Acadian Museum in Erath.
A Loving Family Left Behind
Breaux, a Lafayette native, is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anna Belle Richard, and their three sons: Frank and his wife Julie, Tim and his wife Monique, and Mike and his wife Mary. He was also a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren and great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren. Breaux’s family expresses their eternal gratitude to the staff at Woodbriar Southern Style Assisted Living, as well as individuals who provided care and support during his time of need.
Arrangements for the funeral service are currently pending at Martin & Castille Funeral Home, located at 330 St. Landry St. in Lafayette.
