Remembering Don Gullett: The Natural Athlete of Northeastern Kentucky

Former Cincinnati Reds pitching great Don Gullett, a true legend in northeastern Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 73. Gullett was not only revered as one of the greatest athletes in the region’s history, but he was also known for his exceptional skills in three different sports: baseball, football, and basketball.

A Multi-Talented Athlete

Don Gullett was a natural athlete who excelled in every sport he played. During his high school years at McKell High School, he received 17 basketball scholarship offers from major colleges, 35 football scholarship offers (including prestigious institutions like Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Alabama), and was even projected to be the number one draft choice in professional baseball.

Gullett’s love for sports began at a young age. He reminisced about playing softball in grade school, even competing against boys much older than him. Back then, he didn’t even have a glove and played barehanded. It was Walter Willis, an educational figure in Greenup, who gave him his first glove and ignited his passion for baseball.

The Influence of His Older Brother

Gullett attributed his sporting success to his older brother Jack, who may not have played high school sports but had a deep understanding of the games. They would often play backyard community ball together, participating in football, basketball, and baseball matches. Jack’s guidance and knowledge played a significant role in shaping Don’s sporting abilities.

A Dominating Force on the Field

Gullett’s athletic prowess was evident throughout his high school career, particularly in baseball, where he was a force to be reckoned with. Scouts from major league teams began to take notice of him, and his reputation as a talented left-handed pitcher grew.

One game against Portsmouth Clay in 1969 solidified Gullett’s legacy. With 23 or 24 major league scouts in attendance, he pitched a perfect game, striking out 20 of the 21 batters he faced. This remarkable performance left the scouts astounded and further cemented Gullett’s potential as a professional baseball player.

A Stellar Career Cut Short

Don Gullett’s professional career took off when he was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the first round of the amateur draft. He went on to win 109 games with both the Reds and the Yankees, with six World Series appearances to his name. Gullett was an integral part of World Series championship teams in 1975 and 1976 with the Reds, and again in 1977 and 1978 with the Yankees.

Tragically, a torn rotator cuff in July 1978 forced Gullett to retire at the age of 27. Despite his career being cut short, he left an indelible mark on the baseball world with his impressive record of 109 wins and 50 losses.

Fondly Remembered

Don Gullett will forever be remembered as a true sporting icon in northeastern Kentucky. His remarkable skills, unwavering determination, and genuine love for the game made him a beloved figure both on and off the field. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Don Gullett.
