Grand Rapids, Mich. (WOOD) – William “Bill” Post, the mastermind behind the beloved breakfast treat, the Pop-Tart, has sadly passed away at the age of 96. According to his obituary, Post died on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy that has brought joy to millions of people around the world.

Childhood and Early Life

Post was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Dutch immigrant parents. Growing up on the south side of the city, he attended Grand Rapids Christian High School before serving in the Army Air Corps. He then went on to spend two years studying at Calvin College.

The Rise of a Legend

Post’s journey into the world of baking began when he was just 16 years old. He started working at Hekman Biscuit Company, known today as the Keebler Company, washing trucks. By the time he turned 21, Post had become the full-time personnel manager at the company. Over the next two decades, he worked his way up the ranks and eventually became the plant manager.

In an article for Holland Home, Post reminisced about the birth of the iconic Pop-Tart. “Then, Kellogg’s approached us, looking for a treat that could go in the toaster,” he said. “Within four months, we created the Pop-Tart.” His ingenuity and hard work led to the creation of a breakfast staple that has delighted people of all ages for generations.

A Life of Humility and Faith

Despite his extraordinary accomplishments, Post remained a humble man with a heart dedicated to serving others. He was known for his strong faith and often shared his story of God’s goodness with young people in classrooms. Post would graciously bring along his signature Pop-Tarts, a small gesture that brought joy to countless children.

Post is survived by his two children, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will carry on his legacy.

Remembering Bill Post

May 2024 will mark the release of “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story,” a Netflix film that chronicles the invention of the iconic treat. The movie, starring Jerry Seinfeld, will pay homage to Post’s incredible contribution to the world of breakfast pastries.
