In a series of events over the weekend, the Saskatoon Police Aerial Support Unit (ASU) played a crucial role in apprehending suspects involved in various criminal activities. These incidents took place in different locations across the city, highlighting the versatility and effectiveness of the ASU in maintaining law and order.
Altercation Leads to Stabbing and Assault
On the evening of February 11, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Saskatoon Police received a distress call regarding an altercation in progress in the 400 block of Confederation Drive. The incident involved a man being stabbed and a woman being assaulted. Unfortunately, the suspect managed to escape before the arrival of the police.
However, thanks to the swift response of the ASU, the 17-year-old perpetrator was successfully tracked down and apprehended. He now faces charges of Aggravated Assault. The victim, although transported to the hospital with serious injuries, is expected to recover fully. (Court Information Number: 991258757)
Suspect with a Sawed-off Rifle Apprehended
Later that same night, at approximately 11:11 p.m., the Saskatoon Police were dispatched to investigate an altercation in the vicinity of Avenue O and 21st Street West. Coincidentally, during their arrival, the ASU located a suspect in the 100 block of Ave O South. The vigilant ASU members observed the suspect discarding an object, which was later identified as a sawed-off rifle.
The 18-year-old man was promptly arrested and charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to the public, concealing a weapon, and breaching court orders. This swift action by the ASU ensured the removal of a potentially lethal weapon from the streets. (Court Information Number: 991258780)
Pursuit and Arrest of Vehicle Theft Suspects
In the early hours of February 12, at approximately 1:03 a.m., the Saskatoon Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of Gibson Bend. Upon attempting a traffic stop, the suspects refused to comply and evaded the authorities. Recognizing the need for specialized assistance, the ASU took charge of the pursuit.
The ASU diligently tracked the stolen vehicle, which ultimately led them to the airport. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Despite their efforts, a 25-year-old female was successfully apprehended and now faces charges related to possession of uncontrolled substances, theft over $5000, and possession of a weapon.
Furthermore, in a separate incident in the 3000 block of 33rd Street West, the ASU once again proved its effectiveness. Another stolen vehicle was reported, and the ASU swiftly located both the suspect and the vehicle in the 100 block of Avenue T South. The 28-year-old suspect was arrested without incident.
These successful interventions by the ASU demonstrate their commitment to upholding public safety and their ability to swiftly apprehend suspects involved in criminal activities.
