Accident – Death – Obituary News :

LOS ANGELES — An unfortunate incident unfolded at a beach club in the Mexican resort city of Tulum, resulting in the deaths of an American woman and a man from Belize. Reports suggest that the fatal shooting, which occurred on Friday night, was a dispute between drug dealers. Officials have confirmed the incident and shared details regarding the victims.

American Woman Caught in the Crossfire

Prosecutors in Quintana Roo, the Caribbean coast state where Tulum is located, have emphasized that the American woman, identified as 44-year-old Niko Honarbakhsh, had no connection to the alleged drug dealer involved in the shooting. Tragically, Honarbakhsh was caught in the crossfire and lost her life. She was living in Cancun, according to sources from ABC News.

Denial of Couple Speculations

Contrary to reports in local media, prosecutors have denied any romantic involvement between the American woman and the Belizean man who was also killed. They dismissed rumors by highlighting that a photograph of the Belizean man showed him with an entirely different woman.

Location and Background

Tulum, situated south of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, is closer to Belize and shares a border with Mexico on the Caribbean coast. The region has unfortunately witnessed cases where foreign tourists have been caught in drug gang shootouts, leading to fatal consequences.

Drug Dealer Connection

The man from Belize who lost his life in the shooting was found to be in possession of cocaine and pills, supporting the belief that he was involved in drug dealing. Prosecutors have identified the suspects in the shootings and are currently searching for them.

Past Incidents Highlighting Safety Concerns

Tulum faced a similar tragedy in 2021 when two tourists, including a California travel blogger of Indian origin and a German national, were killed while dining at a restaurant. They were unintended victims caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival drug dealers. These incidents have raised safety concerns for tourists visiting Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Travel Alert and Increased Situational Awareness

In response to such incidents, the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert urging travelers to exercise heightened situational awareness, especially after dark, when visiting Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts. The safety advisory specifically mentioned destinations like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.
