World Record Marathon Holder Kevin Kiptum Dies at Age 24
Kevin Kiptum, the world record holder for the marathon, has tragically passed away at the young age of 24. Hailing from Chepkorio, Kenya, Kiptum was a highly regarded long-distance runner and was considered one of the greatest in his field.
With the upcoming Olympics in Paris, Kiptum was a strong favorite to secure the gold medal. His exceptional talent and dedication made him a force to be reckoned with in the world of running.
Last October, Kiptum made history by winning the Chicago marathon with a remarkable time of 2:00.35, breaking the previous world record set by fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge by a remarkable 34 seconds. However, it was only last Tuesday that World Athletics officially approved Kiptum’s landmark time.
Tragically, following his extraordinary achievement, news has emerged of Kiptum’s untimely demise.
World Athletics president Seb Coe expressed his shock and sadness on social media, paying tribute to Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. Coe stated, “It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where Kelvin set his extraordinary marathon world record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time. An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly.”
Hundreds of others have also taken to social media to express their condolences and pay tribute to Kiptum. One person wrote, “Such sad news. RIP Kevin Kiptum.” Another individual added, “The passing of elite marathoner Kevin Kiptum leaves an immense void in the world of distance running. Through sheer talent and grit, he was a north star who guided many athletes to push boundaries thought impossible. Deepest condolences to his family and the entire athletics fraternity.”
Amidst the outpouring of tributes, distressing details surrounding Kiptum’s death have surfaced. According to the BBC, the men’s marathon world record holder was involved in a fatal road accident in his home country. Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, lost their lives in a car crash on Sunday night. The incident occurred at approximately 11 pm, with police reporting that the vehicle lost control and rolled, resulting in the immediate deaths of both individuals. A third passenger, a female, was also injured and rushed to the hospital.
Kiptum’s passing comes shortly after he revealed his plans to become the first athlete to run an official marathon in under two hours, with Rotterdam set as the location for this groundbreaking event in April.
As we mourn the loss of Kevin Kiptum, we remember his incredible achievements and the legacy he leaves behind. His talent and determination will forever inspire athletes around the world, and he will be deeply missed.
