Marathon World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum Dies in Tragic Car Crash

London, England – Kelvin Kiptum, the renowned marathon world record holder, tragically passed away at the young age of 24 in a car accident in western Kenya on Sunday. The accident also claimed the life of Kiptum’s coach, Gervais Hakizimana.

News of their untimely demise has sent shockwaves through the athletics community and beyond. World Athletics president, Sebastian Coe, expressed his deep condolences, stating, “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana. On behalf of all of World Athletics, we express our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates, and the Kenyan nation.”

Kiptum, who recently made history by setting a new world record at the 2023 Chicago Marathon with a remarkable time of 2:00.35, was widely regarded as an incredible athlete. Coe, who had the privilege of officially confirming Kiptum’s historic time, described him as an individual who would leave behind an extraordinary legacy.

The car crash occurred between the cities of Eldoret and Kaptagat at 11 pm local time. According to an ESPN report, Kiptum and Hakizimana lost their lives instantly, while an unidentified woman who was also in the car sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

The area where the accident took place is known for its high altitude and is a popular training base for long-distance runners. The local police commander, Peter Mulinge, stated that Kiptum, who was driving a Toyota Premio at the time of the incident, lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road, and plunged 60 meters into a ditch, colliding with a large tree.

Kiptum rose to fame when he became the first person to complete the Chicago Marathon in under 2 hours and 1 minute, setting the record in October 2023. His incredible achievement solidified his status as a rising star in long-distance running and positioned him as the successor to fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, who held the previous marathon record.

With his outstanding performances, Kiptum captured the hearts of fans worldwide and left an indelible mark on the sport. His victory at the London Marathon in April 2023 further cemented his reputation as one of the greatest athletes of his generation.

The loss of such a talented and promising athlete has left the sports community mourning. Kiptum’s untimely departure is a tremendous loss for the world of marathon running and a tragic reminder of the fragility of life. His legacy will continue to inspire aspiring athletes around the globe.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families, friends, and teammates of Kelvin Kiptum and Gervais Hakizimana, as well as the entire Kenyan nation, during this difficult time.
