Accident – Death – Obituary News : Helicopter Crash in Baker, California

Baker, Calif. (CNS) — Federal investigators are now on the scene of a tragic helicopter crash in San Bernardino County, California. The crash claimed the lives of six people, including an executive of a Nigerian bank, his wife and son, and the former chair of the Nigerian Exchange Group. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is working diligently to piece together the details of the incident.

On Sunday, NTSB member Michael Graham provided an update on the recovery efforts, stating that all major components of the Airbus Eurocopter EC130 helicopter had been retrieved from the crash site. This includes the three main rotor blades, the main transmission, the tail rotor, landing gear skids, and various avionics components. The wreckage will be moved to a secure location on Tuesday for further examination.

According to NTSB flight-tracking data, the helicopter was traveling along I-15 at an altitude of approximately 1000 to 1500 feet above ground. As the flight neared its end, the helicopter made a slight right turn, veering south of the interstate. It then began a gradual descent with an increasing ground speed before the flight data ended about a quarter-mile from the crash site. Graham noted that the wreckage indicated a nose-low, right-bank angle upon impact with the terrain.

NTSB meteorologists have confirmed witness reports of rain and wintery mist in the area at the time of the crash. These weather conditions will be taken into consideration during the investigation.
