Genesse Ivonne Moreno Named as Shooter at Lakewood Church

HOUSTON (KXAN) – The suspect responsible for the shooting at Houston’s popular Lakewood Church on Sunday has been identified as 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno, according to a search warrant obtained by Nexstar on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when Moreno entered Pastor Joel Osteen’s megachurch armed with a long gun, as confirmed by the Houston Police Department. She proceeded to shoot and injure one man before being killed by two off-duty security officers. Tragically, a young boy who accompanied Moreno was also shot and is not expected to survive.

According to the search warrant, Moreno was armed with an AR-15 and made bomb threats. Police officers noticed substances consistent with the manufacture of explosive devices in her possession, although the credibility of the threat is yet to be determined.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) identified Agent Adrian Herrera as one of the off-duty officers involved in the incident. Agent Herrera had been working security for the church at the time of the shooting. TABC Chairman Kevin Lilly expressed pride in the rapid response of their agent and other law enforcement officials, stating that their brave actions likely averted an even greater tragedy.

Agent Herrera, who has been employed by TABC for approximately five years, has been placed on paid administrative leave while an internal investigation into the shooting is conducted, as stated in a TABC press release.

Houston Police Chief Troy Finner did not disclose the suspect’s identity during a Sunday news conference but described her as a woman in her early to mid-30s. He mentioned that she was wearing a trench coat and carrying a backpack at the time of the incident.

Chief Finner also confirmed that the young boy accompanying the suspect was shot, but did not specify if one of the off-duty officers inadvertently hit the child while returning fire on the suspect.

“That female, that suspect, put that baby in danger. I’m going to put that blame on her,” Chief Finner stated.

Chief Finner and Mayor John Whitmire will be hosting a press conference in Houston on Monday at 1:30 p.m.
