Accident – Death – Obituary News : British Man Reports Theft of 200,000 Baht Belongings by Thai Transwoman
A 24-year-old British man has filed a complaint against a Thai transwoman after his belongings, estimated to be worth over 200,000 baht, disappeared from his luxury hotel near Bangkok. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Yanaphat, was arrested on February 11.
The victim, Daniel, reported the incident to the Bang Yai Police Station in the Nonthaburi province on February 10. According to Daniel, his friend had gone to Khao San Road alone and met the transwoman. Later, the friend invited the transwoman to Daniel’s hotel room for a drink.
On the following day, Daniel woke up to find that the transwoman had vanished along with his valuables, including US$1,500 in cash (equivalent to 54,000 baht), £100 in cash (equivalent to 4,500 baht), 2 Acer laptops, 1 HP laptop, 2 iPhone XR, 2 credit cards, a bag, a Canon camera, and a camera lens.
The hotel’s security camera footage was reviewed by the police, who were able to identify Yanaphat as the thief. The video showed Yanaphat leaving the hotel with Daniel’s friend and later leaving the hotel alone early in the morning.
Yesterday, the police successfully arrested Yanaphat at her condominium in the Wongsaang district of Bangkok. During the interrogation, Yanaphat confessed to the theft and admitted to selling all the stolen items. She also revealed that she had used Daniel’s credit card at a convenience store near her condo.
Yanaphat now faces two charges under Thai law. The first charge falls under Section 335 of the Criminal Law, which pertains to committing theft in a dwelling place. This offense carries a penalty of imprisonment ranging from one to five years and a fine between 20,000 to 100,000 baht. The second charge is under Section 269 of the Criminal Law, which relates to using another person’s credit card. The punishment for this offense includes imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.
In light of this incident, the police have issued a warning to foreigners visiting entertainment venues in Thailand. They advise against trusting anyone they meet for the first time and strongly discourage taking strangers to their accommodation to avoid falling victim to scams.
