Accident – Death – Obituary News :
A heart-wrenching case of child abuse and neglect has shocked the community in Hawaii, as a 10-year-old girl tragically starved to death and suffered multiple injuries, including the absence of the bridge of her nose. The girl’s parents, Brandy Blas and Thomas Blas, along with her grandmother Debra Geron, are now facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the devastating incident.
The grim discovery was made on January 18 when Honolulu police officers and paramedics responded to a distress call at a residence around 8:20 a.m. The unresponsive girl, later identified as Geanna Bradley, was found in her bedroom and immediately moved to the living room for emergency CPR. Unfortunately, all efforts to resuscitate her proved futile, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Severe Injuries and Disturbing Neglect
Upon examining Geanna’s body, authorities were alarmed to find several injuries, including the shocking absence of half of her nose, as detailed in the probable cause arrest affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime. Scratches were also observed around her eyes, ears, and cheeks. Furthermore, the young girl appeared severely malnourished, with her ribcage and clavicle bones visibly protruding.
During questioning, Debra Geron, Geanna’s grandmother, claimed that she went to wake up Geanna and her siblings around 6 a.m. that day. Initially hearing Geanna snoring, she assumed the girl was still asleep. However, upon returning to the room later in the morning, Geron noticed that Geanna was barely breathing. She immediately called in Brandy Blas, who joined her in performing CPR and contacting emergency services.
Claims of Accidental Injuries and Psychological Issues
Brandy Blas, in her interview with investigators, revealed that she and her husband were not Geanna’s biological parents but had gained custody of her when she was around 2 years old. She attributed the injury to Geanna’s nose to a fall from a bicycle. Blas also mentioned that Geanna had been diagnosed with psychological issues such as ADHD, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. According to her account, Geanna would throw herself to the ground during tantrums when she didn’t get her way, resulting in the other injuries. Blas admitted to not seeking medical attention for Geanna’s injuries, considering them to be normal and treatable at home.
Contrary to her mother’s claims, doctors who examined Geanna’s body determined that the young girl had suffered from prolonged child abuse and neglect. An autopsy revealed that the cause of her death was a combination of starvation, blunt force injury due to assault, prolonged immobilization and physical restraint, medical neglect, and pneumonia.
Shockingly, Geanna had only gained three pounds over a span of two years and had not received a wellness checkup since she was 5 years old, according to detectives.
Disturbing Evidence of Abuse
Investigators uncovered several disturbing videos from surveillance cameras and baby monitors found on Debra Geron’s phone. One video depicted Geanna standing blindfolded in a fenced area, while another showed her bound with duct tape around her arms and torso, with tape covering her eyes. Additionally, Thomas Blas, Geanna’s stepfather, reportedly appeared in a video where he kicked her in the head without any apparent reason.
Text messages retrieved by authorities also revealed shocking details, with Brandy Blas and Debra Geron instructing Thomas Blas to “ignore” Geanna. The messages suggested that Geanna was confined to a box for sleeping and had to use a bucket for bathroom purposes.
Multiple Victims of Abuse
The tragedy doesn’t end with Geanna’s death. Authorities also removed another child from the household, a 4-year-old boy who had been adopted by the Blas family. This young boy was found to have suffered from severe calorie and psychological deprivation. Fortunately, the biological children of the Blas couple appeared to be in good health.
Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan expressed his horror during a press conference, stating, “It’s horrifying that this would happen to a 10-year-old or any child. This is not what we want our communities to raise children as.”
As of now, Brandy Blas, Thomas Blas, and Debra Geron remain in jail without bond, awaiting further legal proceedings.
