Longtime NPR Journalist Bob Edwards Dies at 76

Bob Edwards, the beloved former National Public Radio journalist and newscaster, has passed away at the age of 76, according to an announcement from the network. Edwards, who hosted NPR’s Morning Edition show for nearly 25 years, was a trusted voice in the lives of millions of public radio listeners.
No further details about Edwards’ death have been disclosed at this time.
NPR CEO John Lansing expressed his appreciation for Edwards’ contribution to audio journalism, stating, “Bob Edwards understood the intimate and distinctly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums. Staff at NPR and listeners alike will remember Bob Edwards with gratitude.”
Beginning his career at NPR in 1974 during the Nixon impeachment and Watergate hearings, Edwards quickly became a prominent figure. He co-hosted the flagship evening news show, All Things Considered, alongside Susan Stamberg. However, Edwards made his most lasting impact when he helped launch NPR’s morning newsmagazine, Morning Edition, in 1979.

For over two decades, Edwards provided the early morning soundtrack for millions of listeners, establishing himself as one of the most authoritative voices in public broadcasting.
In 2004, Edwards bid farewell to NPR after the network decided to replace him as co-host of Morning Edition. Despite this change, Edwards continued to contribute to the network through his show, Bob Edwards Weekend, and as a host on Sirius XM Radio.
Steve Inskeep, one of Edwards’ successors as Morning Edition host, paid tribute to his unforgettable voice on NPR in a social media post. The NPR Weekend Edition host, Scott Simon, also expressed his sadness, praising Edwards for his contributions to American life.
