LEXINGTON, Ky. — The world of opera mourns the loss of Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez Smith, a celebrated soprano known for her mesmerizing performance in the 1981 French cult-classic film “Diva.” At the age of 75, Fernandez Smith passed away peacefully at her home in Lexington, Kentucky, on February 2 after battling cancer.

A Life of Talent and Passion

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Fernandez Smith began her journey in the world of music at the Academy of Vocal Arts in her hometown. She then furthered her education at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. Her incredible talent and undeniable passion for singing caught the attention of filmmakers while she was performing “La boheme” in Paris, ultimately leading her to star in the movie “Diva,” directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix.

From the moment Fernandez Smith graced the screen, wearing a stunning white gown and singing the captivating aria “Ebben? Ne andrò lontana” from the opera “La Wally,” it was clear that she was destined for greatness. This iconic performance became the hallmark of her illustrious 25-year career, taking her to renowned opera houses across Europe and making her the centerpiece of countless gala events.

Reflecting on her sudden rise to fame, Fernandez Smith humbly admitted, “The film gave me an exposure that I could not have imagined, and I had to catch up with my own fame when the floodgates opened to do countless operas. My repertoire simply wasn’t that great, and there was so much expectation to do everything well.”

A Life Well-Lived

After her husband, Andrew Smith, returned to his hometown in Kentucky in the 1990s to direct the voice program at Kentucky State University, Fernandez Smith spent more time in the Bluegrass State. She became a beloved figure in the community, working as a special education teacher at an elementary school and actively participating in the children’s music program at Main Street Baptist Church.

Everett McCorvey, director of the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, fondly remembered Fernandez Smith as a humble and reserved individual who shunned the limelight despite it being irresistibly drawn to her. “Wilhelmenia was always a very quiet person and did not crave the limelight,” he said. “Although the limelight craved her.”

A Farewell to a Beloved Soprano

On Friday, funeral services were held at a church in Lexington to honor the life and legacy of Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Sheena Maria Fernandez, and her sister. The loss of this talented soprano leaves a void in the world of opera, but her contributions and unforgettable performances will forever be remembered.

Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez Smith’s passion for music and her ability to captivate audiences with her enchanting voice will continue to inspire generations of opera lovers. May she rest in eternal peace, leaving behind a legacy that will resonate for years to come.
