Kramer and his band actively participated in the Yippie protest movement during the infamous 1968 Democratic National Convention, and they often performed as a house band for the radical White Panther Party, supporting the Black Panthers. Following the MC5’s original dissolution, the band released two studio albums, “Back in the USA” in 1970 and “High Time” in 1971. Despite his self-destructive behavior, Kramer explained, “No matter how bad my hangover was, I enjoyed waking up in the morning.”
In 1974, Kramer faced a turning point in his life when he was arrested on drug charges and sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison. The experience proved to be a catalyst for his recovery and personal growth. He subsequently wrote an honest memoir titled “The Hard Stuff: Dope, Crime, the MC5, and My Life of Impossibilities,” which delved into his band’s tumultuous existence and his work in prison reform. Kramer, along with fellow musicians Tom Morello and Chuck D., co-founded Jail Guitar Doors, an organization dedicated to bringing musical instruments into prisons.
