Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A primary school teacher, who miraculously survived a cattle rustlers’ attack at the tender age of nine, resulting in his blindness, has tragically been shot dead by suspected bandits. The incident occurred on the morning of Saturday, February 10.

Thomas Kibet, a 55-year-old head teacher at Kagir Primary School in Baringo North, was traveling on a motorcycle with his wife and a child to Kipcherere Secondary School in the same sub-county for a function when they were ambushed by armed bandits in the Namba area, according to local police.

Baringo Police Commander Julius Kiragu confirmed that during the ambush, the teacher was fatally shot in the head and died instantly. Kibet’s wife and their child were also found injured in the area, with injuries to their leg and hand respectively.

The motorcycle they were riding belonged to a police reservist (NPR), who was also the rider during the attack.

It is worth noting that Kibet had previously survived a bandit attack in 1978 when he was just a nine-year-old boy. Unfortunately, the injuries sustained from that attack had left him permanently blind.

On the same day, another police officer was killed in a raid on a camp in Chesuman, Elgeyo Marakwet. Sergeant Anthony Mwangi was shot in the head while walking to an outside latrine around 4 am. Thankfully, his two colleagues at the camp escaped unharmed.

According to the police, the camp was targeted by an unknown number of gunmen seeking revenge for the killing of a notorious and wanted suspected bandit known as Oliver Kimutai, also known as Mutee.

These recent incidents add to the alarming number of attacks in the region, with more than 20 casualties reported in the past few months. There is an urgent need for authorities to address the escalating issue of banditry in the area.

Just last week, gunmen attacked and killed two individuals, including a member of the National Police Reservist, in a village in Kaputir, Turkana County. The incident occurred as the police reservist was escorting locals to a watering point in Nakwamoru. Witnesses and the police revealed that the group was ambushed by waiting gunmen who killed the NPR and a 35-year-old civilian. Additionally, the assailants stole the NPR’s G3 rifle, along with 20 bullets, before fleeing the scene.

In another distressing incident, a 58-year-old man named Peter Lokuruka Ekai was found dead on the roadside after being shot in the head in a village in Turkana County on Wednesday, January 31.

These series of attacks highlight the urgency for enhanced security measures to protect the lives and well-being of the residents in the affected regions.
