Bob Moore, Founder of Bob’s Red Mill, Passes Away at the Age of 94

MILWAUKIE, Ore., February 10, 2024 – Bob Moore, the founder of Bob’s Red Mill and a prominent figure in the natural foods industry, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the age of 94. Known for his larger-than-life personality and passion for whole grains, Moore will be remembered as a visionary leader and a dedicated advocate for healthy eating.

A true entrepreneur, Moore’s love for healthy foods and whole grain milling began in his childhood and eventually led to the establishment of Bob’s Red Mill in 1978. Initially serving the local community in Portland, Ore., the company quickly gained recognition and became a global food brand, offering over 200 products in more than 70 countries. Moore’s commitment to his company’s success was evident through his continued involvement as a board member until his passing.

In 2010, Moore’s generosity extended to his employees when he established the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) at Bob’s Red Mill, ensuring the company’s future by transferring ownership to the dedicated individuals who helped build and grow it. Today, more than 700 employees proudly own the company, carrying on Moore’s legacy.

Bob’s Red Mill CEO, Trey Winthrop, expressed his gratitude for Moore’s contributions, stating, “Bob’s legacy will forever live on in all of us who had the privilege of working with him. His values are deeply ingrained in the Bob’s Red Mill brand, and we are committed to maintaining its dedication to unprocessed foods, high-quality ingredients, and support for employee-owners and organizations focused on nutritional health.”

Moore and his late wife, Charlee, were passionate about inspiring future generations through their philanthropic endeavors. They made significant financial contributions to various Oregon universities, including Oregon State University, where they were named honorary Beavers for their generous donations. The Moores helped fund the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition, and Preventive Health in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Their contributions also established the Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness at Oregon Health & Science University, among other research programs throughout the state.

Bob Moore is survived by his three sons, Ken, Bob Jr., and David, along with their respective wives, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by his family, the Bob’s Red Mill family, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey.

A life service is currently being planned, with details to be announced at a later date. In the meantime, friends and fans are encouraged to visit the Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grain Store in Milwaukee, Ore., to share their memories and pay tribute to Bob’s enduring legacy.
