Bob Moore, the beloved founder and iconic face of internationally renowned Bob’s Red Mill food products, passed away on Saturday at the age of 94. His death has left a void in the health food industry and among his countless admirers.
A Visionary in Nutrition
Born in 1927, Bob Moore launched Bob’s Red Mill in 1978 alongside his wife, Charlee, after they adopted a nutritious diet centered around whole grains. The company quickly gained popularity and expanded its product range to include over 200 items, ranging from whole wheat flour to delicious granola and grain-free brownie mix. Moore’s grandfatherly appearance, with his signature cap, glasses, white beard, and bolo tie, became synonymous with the brand, making him instantly recognizable on grocery store shelves across Oregon and beyond.
Passing the Torch
In a remarkable move, Moore decided to relinquish control of the company on his 81st birthday in 2010. Through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), he transferred ownership to the dedicated workers who had helped build Bob’s Red Mill. Today, over 700 employees proudly own the company, a testament to Moore’s commitment to his loyal team.
“I may have given them the company,” Moore stated in 2010, “but the boss part is still mine.”
A Lasting Legacy
Moore retired from the company in 2018 at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and passion for unprocessed foods. Trey Winthrop, the current CEO of Bob’s Red Mill, expressed his gratitude for Moore’s guidance and emphasized the company’s commitment to preserving his vision.
“He did everything in his power to leave us on a strong path forward,” Winthrop said in a news release announcing Moore’s passing. “All of us feel responsible and motivated to preserve his old-world approach to unprocessed foods; his commitment to pure, high-quality ingredients; and his generosity to employee owners and educational organizations focused on nutritional health.”

Despite the loss of its founder, Bob’s Red Mill remains dedicated to carrying on Moore’s legacy. The company will continue to uphold his principles of providing wholesome, unprocessed foods made with the highest quality ingredients.
