Renowned artist A Ramachandran, known for his monumental canvases, sculptures, and colourful oil and watercolour paintings, passed away at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness. The news of his demise has left the art community mourning the loss of a great talent.
Born in 1935 in Attingal, Kerala, Ramachandran’s artistic journey began after he graduated with a degree in Malayalam literature from Kerala University. He further honed his skills by obtaining a diploma in fine arts and crafts from Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan. It was during his time there that he studied under the guidance of renowned artists like Ramkinkar Baij and Benod Behari Mukherjee.
Influenced by his mentors, Ramachandran embraced an expressionist style that reflected the pain and misery of urban life. He delved into the suffering he had witnessed in a post-partition Kolkata, capturing the essence of the struggles faced by individuals in his artwork.
As his career progressed, Ramachandran turned his attention towards the tribal communities of Rajasthan. He extensively painted their lives and culture, showcasing their traditions and heritage through his brushstrokes. This exploration of different cultures and communities added depth and diversity to his body of work.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of art, Ramachandran was elected a Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 2002. Additionally, he received the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 2005 for his outstanding service to the nation through his artistic endeavors.
The news of Ramachandran’s passing has left the art fraternity in shock and sorrow. Arun Vadehra, owner of Vadehra Art Gallery, expressed his deep sadness, stating that Ramachandran was not only a great artist but also a wonderful person. Vadehra had the privilege of working closely with the artist for nearly three decades, and he will be dearly missed.
Another friend and artist, Bose Krishnamachari, fondly recalled his recent conversation with Ramachandran, where they discussed various ideas and projects. Ramachandran’s passion for education and his desire to produce children’s books were topics of interest during their meeting. Krishnamachari remembered Ramachandran as a person with incredible ideas and a positive outlook.
The art community’s loss has also been acknowledged by Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan, who paid his condolences to the late artist. Khan highlighted Ramachandran’s global fame and the influence of rural life and myths in his paintings.
A Ramachandran’s legacy will continue to live on through his artwork, which touched the hearts of many. His unique style, deep insights into human emotions, and exploration of different cultures have left an indelible mark on the art world.
