Charismatic Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa, known for his energetic style and East Asian sensibility, has died at the age of 88. Ozawa, who led the Boston Symphony Orchestra for nearly 30 years, passed away peacefully at his home in Tokyo, according to his management team.
A World-renowned Conductor Who Brought East Asian Sensibility to Western Classical Music
Ozawa was born in 1935 in the Chinese province of Manchuria, which was then a Japanese colony. He developed a passion for music at a young age and started learning piano in elementary school. However, a rugby injury in his teenage years led him to switch to conducting.
In 1959, Ozawa moved abroad and had the opportunity to meet some of the greatest luminaries in the classical music world, including Leonard Bernstein. He became Bernstein’s assistant at the New York Philharmonic in the 1961-1962 season.
Throughout his career, Ozawa led orchestras in Chicago, Toronto, and San Francisco, but it was his 29-year tenure as the musical director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra that made him the longest-serving conductor in the orchestra’s history.
