ANDERSON CREEK, N.C. (WNCN) — An active-duty soldier from the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Liberty tragically lost his life in a high-speed, single-car accident in Harnett County on Saturday morning, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred around 4:16 a.m. when Harnett County 911 received a crash notification from a cellphone. The alert indicated that the wreck had taken place on Overhills Road, approximately half a mile east of Bill Shaw Road and west of Anderson Creek School Road.

Upon arrival at the scene, troopers discovered a 2018 Kia Stinger V8 partially lodged in a tree. Initial reports suggest that the vehicle was traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour when it veered across the center line and veered off the left side of the road.

The highway patrol stated that the car sideswiped a tree, causing it to spin out of control. Subsequently, the passenger side collided with another tree, resulting in the car overturning and becoming partially wedged in a tree.

Tragically, despite wearing a seat belt, the driver, identified as 25-year-old Nathan Whorton, was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover. Regrettably, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Nathan Whorton was an esteemed soldier assigned to the renowned 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Liberty and was the sole occupant of the car.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is currently awaiting the toxicology report from the medical examiner, but it is suspected that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
