A tragic incident occurred on Thursday, February 8, 2024, in Langley Park, resulting in the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old toddler named Jeremy Poou-Caceres. The young child and his mother were caught in the crossfire between two groups, leading to the toddler being struck by a bullet. Two suspects, identified as 33-year-old Israel Fuentes Jr. and 28-year-old Johnny Alejandro Turcios, have been arrested in connection to the shooting and have been charged accordingly.
The shooting took place in the park located on the 1400 block of Kanawah Street around 5:35 pm local time. Upon hearing gunshots, a nearby police officer arrived at the scene and discovered the mother and toddler with gunshot wounds. The child was immediately rushed to the Children’s National Hospital but was tragically pronounced dead. The mother survived the incident with non-life-threatening injuries.
Prince George’s County Assistant Police Chief Vernon Hale III expressed his condolences, stating, “My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and those around this community who had to witness this.” The police have offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information regarding the incident.
Following an intensive investigation and several tips, authorities apprehended the two suspects, Israel Fuentes Jr. and Johnny Alejandro Turcios, both of whom are from Lewisdale. They have been charged with first-degree murder. Asst. Chief Vernon Hale III commended the detectives assigned to the case, saying, “They have worked with fierce determination to identify those responsible for taking the life of this innocent child. We hope these two arrests provide some comfort to Jeremy’s grieving family.”
Police have also discovered that the suspects were accompanied by two other men in a stolen car. The authorities are currently searching for these additional suspects. A gun, potentially used in the shooting, was found in the stolen vehicle, and cell phone footage capturing the chaotic aftermath of the incident has been obtained.
