Accident – Death – Obituary News :

On February 9th, the Yonkers Police Department announced a significant breakthrough in the case of an abandoned newborn baby earlier this week. The Yonkers Police Department received a distressing report on February 6th at around 8:30 pm regarding an abandoned baby found in the hallway of an apartment building located at 32 Chestnut Street in Yonkers, a city in Westchester County, New York.

Upon reaching the scene, responding officers discovered a newborn baby girl wrapped in a blanket on the floor near the entrance of the building. The baby still had her umbilical cord attached, which was tied with a black string. Promptly, the officers and Empress Ambulance personnel began assessing the infant’s condition and immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation and stabilization.

An extensive investigation was launched by the Yonkers Police Department, involving multiple units such as the Special Victims Unit, Major Case Squad, Crime Scene Unit, and Digital Forensics Unit. Detectives dedicated countless hours to reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, ultimately leading them to identify the mother and uncover the facts surrounding the abandonment of the child.

The investigation revealed that a female, later identified as Jaqueline Marleni Perez, a 21-year-old resident of Yonkers, had given birth to the baby by herself earlier that day at around 3:30 pm. The mother dressed the newborn in a t-shirt, wrapped her in a blanket, and left her in the hallway of 32 Chestnut Street at approximately 7:30 pm. Approximately an hour later, a concerned resident discovered the abandoned infant, wrapped her in an additional blanket, and immediately contacted the police for assistance.

Following her unconventional childbirth, the female suspect was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. Subsequently, she was released and taken into custody by the Yonkers Police Department. Marleni Perez now faces one count of Abandonment of a Child, classified as a Class E Felony under the New York State Penal Law. Due to specific bail restrictions, the aforementioned charge does not qualify for bail. Marleni Perez appeared in Yonkers Criminal Court today and was released on her own recognizance.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano expressed his sympathy, stating, “The circumstances surrounding this incident are truly heartbreaking and unfortunate. However, we are grateful that the baby is now stable and safe. I commend the compassionate and swift actions of the Yonkers Police Department in locating the mother and ensuring her well-being after such a traumatic and desperate ordeal. This serves as a poignant reminder that assistance is available to everyone, regardless of the situation, and we should never hesitate to seek help.”

Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza acknowledged the challenges of handling criminal investigations involving child victims, particularly when the victim is less than one-day-old. He commended the dedication and tireless efforts of the detectives involved in swiftly resolving this difficult case. Commissioner Sapienza emphasized that Yonkers, with its six police buildings and twelve fire department buildings, designates all of them as “Safe-Haven” locations. Additionally, several hospitals and other facilities serve as appropriate places for parents to legally surrender custody of infants under 30 days old. The hope is that this incident will raise awareness about the proper procedures to prevent potential tragedies.

The abandoned baby girl remains in stable condition and is currently under the care of Child Protective Services. The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office will handle the prosecution of this case, and further updates will be provided as they become available.
