Henry Blackaby, a renowned pastor and author, known for his influential “Experiencing God” Bible study, has passed away at the age of 88.
The news of Blackaby’s passing was announced by Ben Mandrell, the president of Lifeway Christian Resources, the long-time publisher of Blackaby. Mandrell expressed deep sadness at the loss, describing Blackaby as a great man of God who had made significant contributions to the body of Christ through his pastoral work, writing, and teaching.
Born on April 15, 1935, in British Columbia, Canada, Blackaby had a remarkable journey in his ministry. He served as a pastor in California before being called back to his native Canada to assist a struggling church in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The church, Faith Baptist Church, had only 10 members at the time, but under Blackaby’s leadership, it not only grew in numbers but also sponsored a college and helped establish 38 other churches.
“EXPERIENCING GOD: KNOWING AND DOING THE WILL OF GOD”
During his time in ministry, Blackaby co-authored the transformative Bible study called “Experiencing God: Knowing and Doing the Will of God” with Claude King. This study drew from Blackaby’s rich pastoral experience and emphasized the importance of seeking and joining God in His work.
Blackaby’s approach to ministry highlighted the need to shift from a human-centered perspective to a God-centered one. Instead of making plans and asking for God’s blessing, he encouraged people to watch where God was working and align themselves with His will.
The impact of the “Experiencing God” Bible study was immense. It sold over eight million copies in English alone and was translated into more than 75 languages, making it a global phenomenon. Blackaby went on to establish a ministry dedicated to spreading the message of the book and became a sought-after speaker. Additionally, he served as the director of prayer and spiritual awakening for the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY
In 2013, Blackaby faced a personal challenge when he went missing for over 24 hours after suffering a heart attack while driving. Thankfully, he was found and underwent life-saving open-heart surgery. The experience served as a testament to his resilience and determination.
Richard Blackaby, Henry’s son and the current president of Blackaby International Ministries, shared the news of his father’s passing. He expressed gratitude for the privilege of having a father who had helped countless people experience God. Richard also acknowledged that his father was now experiencing God in ways that exceeded even his most cherished dreams.
Henry Blackaby was preceded in death by his wife, Marilynn, and is survived by five children and 14 grandchildren.
